Today is the second day of Kwanzaa. I don’t celebrate Kwanzaa, but I appreciate it as a person who appreciates the diversity is our society.
It seems many of us forget, especially over the past few years, the reason why we celebrate anything at all. Some people say “Happy Holidays” because there is more than one holiday celebrated this time of year. The aim is to be inclusive and accepting of the diversity on our country. The aim is not to bash or otherwise erase Christmas.
When you are comfortable with yourself and firmly rooted in your own traditions, it is easier to accept the differences and different traditions of other people. That’s why I love Kwanzaa—even though I do not celebrate it.
The holiday season is supposed to be a time of love, joy and peace. If we are constantly fighting about the “War on Christmas” and “Making Christmas Great Again,” we are losing out on what really matters this time of year.
